Fun Fact Friday: Breathing
In our latest blog post, we learn that the diaphragm muscle contracts to open up space for the lungs to expand. However, it’s not necessarily the extra space that makes air flow in– the extra volume actually lowers the air pressure inside the lungs, which oxygen then fills to balance the pressure.

Today’s breathing exercise is alternate nose breathing, also known as "Nadi Shodhana" in Yogic practice. 👃
Simply block one nostril with your finger and inhale through the other nostril. Then switch, closing that nostril, breathing out the other, and repeat.
This technique can help balance your nervous system and improve lung function.

Fun Fact Friday: Spring Equinox! 🌷
The word “Equinox” comes from latin, meaning “equal night,” as at this time of year, both hemispheres experience roughly equal times of daylight and darkness. March 20th was the Equinox, but you can carry this feeling of balance and harmony into all the days ahead.

Another breathing exercise that you can try is 4-7-8 Breathing. This breath helps us to control our responses to stress and have better resiliency to stress-inducing triggers.
First, inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
Then, hold your breath for 7 counts.
Finally, exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts, and repeat.
Do this as often as you like as part of a daily self-care practice and, better yet, book a yoga session with us for guided breath practice!

Intentional breathing exercises can be very helpful to reduce stress and enhance focus.
One technique you can try is box breathing:
Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold again for 4.
Breathwork is also a focal point of yoga.

Fun Fact Friday 💭
Walking backwards, also known as retro-walking, engages muscles in a different way than forward walking. It can help improve balance, and even sharpen cognitive function!
If you want to try this technique, be mindful of your surroundings, and start with short, slow intervals of backward walking.
